Statement of purpose Master Biotechnology - SOP

SAMPLE STATEMENT OF PURPOSE (SOP) MS Biotechnology

I have been dedicated towards my studies right from childhood. During my school days onwards I developed a special flair towards biology and it is that interest that has persuaded me to take Biology as one of the majors in my 12th grade and Biotechnology as the major in my under graduation.

During my under graduation at Edited College of Technology I had been exposed to many subjects such as Plant Biotechnology, Animal Biotechnology, Biopharmaceuticals. I have deep interest towards molecular biology. The basic unit of life is the cell and the events associated with it is the molecular biology which when disturbed due to any reason causes problem in the form of disease, so whether a person lives normally or suffers from a disease it’s all depends upon the molecular biological state of his constituent cells.

In my second year of my under graduation I fermented wine from grape juice and made a fermenter model depicting a simple bioprocess which I exhibited in a science exhibition conducted by ISTE (Indian Society of Technical Education) received appreciation from everyone. I worked on the title “Isolation and Characterization of Invertase from Aspergillus flavus” these experiences helped me to tune my practical skills and knowledge. I had presented seminars on Ribozymes, Cholinesterase and Cystic fibrosis which have helped me to improve my academic skills.

I had undergone training at various research centers during my summer vacation on topics such as “Electrophoresis at Yercaud Biotech”, “Effluent Treatment at TNPL (Tamilnadu Newsprint and Papers Limited)”, “Plant Tissue Culture at TNAU (TamilNadu Agricultural University, Asia’s leading agricultural college)” and a day interaction with the scientist at IARI( Indian Agricultural Research Institute) on “Wheat Improvement Programme”. Apart from this as a part of our college curriculum we have visited leading biotech companies in India such as Biocon, Shantha Biotechnics, Sakthi sugars and Genei. These experiences have helped me in opening my mind about the research and development taking place in the field of biotechnology.

I would like to pursue my higher studies in the field of molecular biology. This would help me to develop into a very good professional and prepare me to take up research in my future. Education in America would aid in my intellectual growth and academic development.
I have gained an insatiable fervor to learn towards academic excellence and carry out research in the field of molecular biology through my four years of baccalaureate education. I strongly feel that an MS will help me achieving my goal. United States will offer me a very conducive atmosphere for research and development. I am eagerly awaiting for an admission from your esteemed university for my future endeavor in this field.

“A person doesn’t gain knowledge by possessing an insatiable thirst for it,

But by searching for the means to quench it”

In the changing field of Engineering and Technology where each new day sees a spate of new concepts and applications and each passing day makes them obsolete, I wish to have the highest level of education and transcend new horizons. The vast application potential when combined with management always fascinates me and I am keen to continue my academic pursuit in this direction.

A passion to achieve expertise in Management and Information systems and to be a part of the powerful technological workforce of my country, are the objectives to my Graduate Study. It would help hone my skills, earn proficiency and seek professional exposure. A graduate course would pave way to earning hands-on experience and acquire specialization in the desired field of study.

In my undergraduate studies, I have benefited from the breadth of Acharya Nagarjuna University’s syllabi content that has given me a comprehensive exposure to the core areas of Mechanical Engineering and a strong conceptual understanding of the same, but it is the one year course at National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT), Hyderabad that helped me gain excellent fundamentals of Information Technology through a well-structured curriculum. During the course of study I was exposed to MSDOS, WINDOWS-9x, WINDOWS-XP, UNIX. I am well versed in programming languages like C, C++, JAVA and packages like VB (6.0) and ORACLE.

Restricting to one area of study with tremendous competition around is not very helpful and the versatility of courses in this Program amazes me and fosters my keenness in joining this program I believe that this program along with my determination, hard work, perseverance and dedication will help me overcome all hurdles in my future endeavors. Rapidly advancing technology do necessitates mastering of a particular area, Hence I intend to pursue graduate study in “Management Information Sciences”.

MIS program provides the kind of exposure needed to broaden my thinking and undo my insular prejudices that might be still prevalent in me. In a university of such confluence of people from every culture, nationality, religion and ideology, I am sure that exposure to these kinds of diverse influences would aid in the overall development of my personality. I also believe that I have better chances of updating and scaling up my knowledge in your University through this program.

I aver that I shall work to the best of my capabilities and utilize every opportunity given to me in the best possible way. I will be much obliged if I can be admitted into the program, which has eminent professors, state-of -art infrastructure and an amicable environment. I am confident of realizing my goals and developing my personality, if admitted into your esteemed program.

I would like to add that the essence of University education lies in the synergetic relationship between the student and his department. I feel that graduate study in the department of MIS will be the most logical extension of my academic pursuits and a major step towards achieving my objectives.

Writing the Statement of Purpose

Writing the Statement of Purpose

Graduate study is not for slackers. It takes focus and determination to pursue an advanced degree.
That's why admissions committees examine your statement of purpose very closely–they want to see whether you have the right stuff to succeed in graduate school.

What are they really asking anyway?

Different schools will give you different prompts for the statement of purpose. Nonetheless, they're all asking for the same four pieces of information:
  • What you want to study at graduate school?
  • Why you want to study it?
  • What experience you have in your field?
  • What you plan to do with your degree once you have it?
Admissions committees look for candidates with clear, well-defined research interests that arise from experience . With that in mind, your statement should reveal that you care deeply about your chosen discipline and that you have the background to support your ideas and sentiments. It should also demonstrate that you're a diligent student who will remain committed for the long haul.

However you approach these points, it's imperative that you answer the questions asked in the essay prompt. Being substantive and direct is much better than being creative or flashy.
Avoid this mistake

Grad school applicants commonly make the error of including a paragraph about how well–rounded they are: They're avid ultimate-frisbee players, they write short stories or they love to cook. Colleges are interested in this stuff; graduate schools are not. Grad schools are looking for great minds who will achieve mastery of a specific subject area. They don't care that you make a great chicken casserole or play intramural bocce ball.

They do care about those activities that speak to your suitability for graduate work. As a graduate student, you'll be called upon to do difficult coursework and research. You may have to teach undergraduate classes within your field and conceivably even design a course. And you'll have to get along with a diverse group of colleagues who will sometimes work very closely with you. Any experience in school, work or your extracurricular life that speaks to those abilities is worth talking about.

Make your statement of purpose unique
While it's important to be focused, there's no need to be boring. To distinguish your essay, add unique (yet relevant) information. One of the best ways to do this is to discuss, briefly, an idea in your field that turns you on intellectually. It's an effective essay-opener, and it lets you write about something besides yourself for a bit.
Remember, the idea you choose to talk about can tell an admissions committee a lot about you. And it demonstrates your interest in your field, rather than just describing it.

Don't forget
Be sure to show your statement of purpose to someone you respect, preferably the professors who are writing your recommendations, and get some feedback on the content before you send it in. If you need to revise it, do so and then ask for more feedback.

Have someone else proofread your essay for spelling and grammar. A fresh set of eyes often picks up something you missed. Better yet, if you have enough willing friends, have a couple of people proofread each statement.
Finally, don't just reuse the same statement of purpose for each school to which you apply. You can recycle the same information, but make sure you change the presentation to fit each school's individual program
